| NOTE: | Since the creation of the Singularity
Institute in July 2000, much of this document has become obsolete.
In particular, the whole concept of starting an AI industry may turn out
be unnecessary; the Singularity Institute does not currently plan to develop
via an open-source method; the entire technological timeline has been compressed
into three stages of a seed AI designed by a private research team; and,
of course, most of the sections dealing with how to establish a Singularity
Institute are obsolete.
These strategic changes are largely due to improvements in the understanding of seed AI - see Coding a Transhuman AI 2 - which may make it possible to develop a seed AI using fewer resources than previously thought. If the problem of seed AI turns out to be less tractable than expected, the strategies described here would still be a valid fallback plan. |
